Developing exemplars of good practice in using the Brother MPrint Mobile Printer in schools

Overview of project:

Brother UK is interested in working with 5 primary/secondary schools to get feedback on how their MPrint mobile printers can aid student learning, teachers/ staff in their day to day school environment.

What are MPrint printers?

Slim, light and compact, Brother’s MPrint mobile printing devices allow users to print documents from a PDA, BlackBerry or Laptop, wherever they are. They are a perfect solution for printing out the usual day to day style documents ie Word, Excel, Powerpoint, usual Windows applications.

Print sizes

There are two print sizes, A6 and A7 and more information is shown below:

Connection

Using Bluetooth technology, an MPrint printer connects wirelessly to a mobile device such as a laptop, PDA or BlackBerry to produce instant, high-quality print outs, wherever you are. However, USB connection can also be used with a laptop.

Scope of Project

Brother are looking for schools who have strengths in and already are utilising mobile technology like laptops/ PDA’s and who would benefit from trialling mobile printing alongside this technology. This will enable us to understand any application where the mobile printer could be of benefit to schools.

Schools will be expected to use the printers during the Autumn and Spring Terms 2009/2010 and provide feedback and write up their experiences as a scenario. Formal feedback will be requested not more than 2 times during the trial. The scenarios will be displayed jointly by Brother UK and the ICT Register.

Also be open to work with us on a case study upon successful completion of the trial.

Brother UK Commitment

Brother is pleased to offer 5 schools, each of the following:

  • One of each printer (MW-140BT, MW-260BT) for a 6 month trial commencing 1st Sep 09 – 30th Apr 2010
  • 10 Packs of paper (5 x C11 – A7 paper & 5 X C211 – A6 paper)
  • A template to provide feedback and include application images(at the end of each term during the trial).
  • In the event that a school is unable to complete a scenario then the school will be given the opportunity to pay for the printer.
  • On completion of the project, should the schools wish to continue with the printers provided they will be offered a special price to purchase.
  • The school which identifies the best solution illustrating how the printer(s) benefit the school in their learning aids, how they integrate the products successfully in their day to day work and are happy to promote this via a joint case study will be offered the printers free of charge.

Schools commitment:

Produce feedback on the product and a scenario on completion of the activity. Place strength or edit an existing strength on the ICT Register to include a mention of the hardware. Include the activity in the updates provided by schools at their regional meetings. Participating ICT Register schools will need to identify

1. A class or ‘group’ to participate in the activity. The group will use the printer to meet the objectives of the project.

2. A single contact point to be responsible for ensuring the progress of the development activities and the production of the scenario.

ICT Register’s Commitment
