Who was involved in the project?
This innovative research project currently involves three teams of teachers from Holloway School: the Senior Management Team (SMT), ICT Department and PE Department and Islington CLC

Project Outline
Initially the research project involved a short trial of Smartphones in an attempt to establish their potential uses in a school setting. Martin Hodgson (Deputy Head) distributed the 13 multifunctional Smartphones provided by Islington CLC and closely tracked their use over a period of three weeks. Martin gathered very positive feedback and evidence from the staff involved which later informed headteacher Bob Hamlyn’s decision to take on the Smartphones for an extended research period.

The main aims were to:

  • Establish whether the Smartphone positively impact on staff ICT skills
  • Enhance communication lines between staff.

Conclusions/ Findings
The Smartphones have allowed staff to carry a sophisticated ICT device with them wherever they go clearly enhancing the professional image of teaching. Two quotes from two different SMT members send a clear message:

“The phone has dramatically improved my organisation and personal effectiveness. It has 100% replaced my [paper] diary and enabled me to multitask more effectively.”

“The PDA has revolutionised my organisation.”
