MPrint Project[Background information and details of the project] [Initial feedback from Mandeville Primary School] About the LearningWhat was the activity and the key objectives? Activity: PSHE & Transition activity. Objective: to give and receive a compliment; To support children in transition between nursery and Key Stage 1.
ActivityActions taken Children from Year 5 took netbooks to the nursery children’s classroom. While the children were doing child-initiated play, the Year 5 children played with them and noted good personal qualities. They used the netbook to produce a praise card which was then printed on the M-print 260 (A6 size).
What did and didn’t work (Barriers and Enablers) Children enjoyed using the computers to share their compliments. Many of the nursery children joined in with the Year 5s as they produced the card. The nursery children carried their compliment card around with them while they continued to play. All of the nursery children took their compliment cards home with them. The Year 5 children developed social skills in supporting younger children and thinking of a compliment. None of the Year 5 children avoided giving a compliment. Very expensive lesson in terms of printing cost. The activity could have been done without the netbooks.
ImpactEvidence of Success The mobile printers are efficient and user friendly in that children are easily able to record and then print work. However, due to the cost in replacing the paper, there is concern that they would not be a financially viable solution on a long term basis for some schools.
Information about the school/settingMandeville is situated in St Albans. Although St Albans is an affluent area, Mandeville is situated in a lower economic part of the city. Mandeville was deemed outstanding in the last Ofsted report, showing excellent progress scores. An extended school hub is attached to the school which provides significant support to the many children with difficult home situations. The school currently has approximately 240 children. Over the next 4 years, the school will increase to two form entry. We are currently undergoing a major building project to double the number of classrooms. Most of the classes have about 30 children, with a wide range of abilities and ethnicity. Approximately 60% of the school is EAL, with most of these being from Bangladesh.
