ICTWiki HowTo

From ICT Register Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The fundamental idea behind a Wiki is that anyone can edit any page of the site collaboratively.

Since this Wiki is designed for a special purpose within the ICT Register programme, it has been setup so that any visitor may view pages, but only visitors who are logged-in may edit the pages.

Just like the real Wikipedia, there are many useful features, such as 'Recent changes', page histories, user pages and 'user talk' pages:

  • Recent changes gives you a quick view of all the pages in the Wiki which have been edited recently
  • Page history shows all the changes which have been made recently to any page, who made the changes and when, and also gives links to enable you to view exactly what differences there are between versions.
  • User pages are pages where you can give some details about yourself (as much or as little as you want!)
  • User Talk pages are handy places where you can leave messages for other editors (remember: we are all editors!).

Remember!: All changes made here can be reverted if you ever make a mess of things, so don't be afraid to experiment! If you get into real difficulties, please contact me on my User Talk page or just email me at [[1]] and I will be more than happy to help.

A few general hints

It is really helpful if you fill in the little box labelled summary near the bottom of a page when you edit a page. Just a brief message to say what you have changed is really helpful to other editors, and me! If it is a really trivial edit, such as correcting punctuation, just click the 'minor edit' box.

Also really, really helpful is to use the 'Show Preview' button near the bottom of the page and only click on 'Save page' when you are happy with it. This keeps the page histories much neater, and also keeps down the amount of space taken up on the server by all the previous versions of the page.
