A CASE STUDY from WestWirralWorks CLC
Flowol Mimics

Who was involved in the project?
St Anselms Secondary School and Wirral Primaries, the project is being extended to incorporate more secondary schools.
Aims and objectives of the CLC
- Improve access to, and use of, the latest education technology for pupils, teachers and the community;
- Increase attainment levels through use of that technology;
- Improve the quality of teaching and learning; and
- Act as test beds for innovation and new ways of working.
The Project and its Aims:
- Primary teachers are uncomfortable in teaching systems and control. As a result this has beenidentified as a weak area in th primary curriculum. WestWirralWorks CLC trains teachers to use thistechnology and assists in project development and lesson delivery.
- Primary schools have access to limited equipment for teaching control technology. This projectprovides them with access to a far greater range of resources.
- Secondary teachers/students often struggle to come up with innovative ideas for their DT projects.Giving them a focus and an end customer helps to solve this problem. The project also forces them tomake use of a variety of manufacturing techniques and software applications, making this a learningrich project. The school can either keep the completed mimic designs or donate them to its feederprimaries (or even the CLC).
- A limited range of mimics can be bought from suppliers but these tend to be fagile and don't lastlong. Quality, robust items have been manufactured for this project. Students are also able to think ofnew designs for mimics that will stimulate learning.
- Secondary mimics models are not available to buy. One of the aims of the project is to manufacture mimics that are suitable for secondary use.
