A Case Study - BTEC First Collaborative 2004-6
Who was involved in the project?
The Wandsworth City Learning Centre in partnership with three secondary schools, Southfields Community College, Salesian College and John Paull II RC School.
Aims and objectives of the CLC
- Improve access to, and use of, the latest education technology for pupils, teachers and the community;
- Increase attainment levels through use of that technology;
- Improve the quality of teaching and learning; and
- Act as test beds for innovation and new ways of working.

Successes
- An effective collaborative partnership model has been developed.
- Students have access to a wider curriculum offer.
- The quality of vocational teaching has been improved.
- Students have access to a range of industry professionals.
- Good links and partnership working with Higher Education student ambassadors.
- Schools teaching staff have developed their vocational understanding and shared this back at school.
- Very good student achievement.
- Students understanding of vocational courses and progression onto BTEC nationals at school and college.
Areas for development
- Improve advice and guidance to students in Year 9. This will need a better understanding of BTEC courses and their requirements by all staff providing advice to students on their Key Stage 4 options.
- Communication between all partners to be improved further. This will need to include improvement to the tool for monitoring progress through the BTEC modules.
- Better links with parents to improve their understanding of BTEC courses at the CLC and to improve attendance.
